Gear and Car Rentals

Gear Rental Alternatives

It’s the day before you’re supposed to leave on your epic Sierra backpacking trip, but you just realized you’re missing some gear.  CHAOS gear hours are great, but they’re only a few times a week.  If you find yourself needing to make a gear purchase or rental, check out some of the options listed below:

Public Transit

Getting around can be hard for students, who typically don’t have cars own their own. Fortunately, there are ways of getting to some pretty awesome parks and trails via public transit.  Before you resign yourself to catching that 6am Amtrak, though, be sure to send out an email to the CHAOS list to see if anyone has tips on getting to specific places, if you can catch a ride with someone going in the same direction, or, even better, if someone wants to join your trip who has their own vehicle.

Car Rentals

If you do find yourself in need of a rental car, UC Berkeley students get discounted rentals at Enterprise (nearest one to campus is at 1990 Oxford St., across the street from the West Circle).  The discount for students waives the underage driver fee and the additional drivers fee (who can be underage as well).  The discount is valid at all Enterprise locations, not just the one in Berkeley.  You must be 18+ to rent.

  • Head to the main Enterprise website
  • Under “Corporate Account Number or Promotion Code” put “ucbgen” and your age (under 21 ok)
  • Proceed with the rest of the booking
